Hands-on Woodturning for 600 Scouts

Following the successful hands-on woodturning sessions organised by East Herts Woodturners at Gilwell 24 in July, a second event was organised in August at the Cambridge Scout Jamboree (CamJam2011).  At the two events, more than 630 Scouts and leaders experienced Woodturning.

CamJam is a week long camp for Scouts which is held every 4 years. This year the event was attended by over 3000 Scouts and leaders and was held at Huntingdon Racecourse.  On behalf of the AWGB, the East Herts Club organised demonstrations, a display of woodturnings and hands-on woodturning taster sessions for 5 days, as part of the Craft Zone. Three lathes were used for demonstrations and up to 9 lathes for hands-on sessions.  The East Herts Woodturners were supported by turners from Cambridge, Herts and Beds and Bury St Edmunds Clubs as well as Tony Walton, Peter Nicholls and our hard working AWGB Secretary (Mike Collas).

The sessions were so popular that, when the gates to the Craft Zone opened each morning and afternoon, the Scouts ran to our marquee to ensure they were in the queue to ‘have a go’.  Despite 430 Scouts and leaders having a go, many more had to be turned away.  In fact, when we found that some were queuing for up to 2 hours to have a go, we introduced a ticket system to manage the queue.  The picture below shows the effect queuing had on Boris, a member of the Cambridge University Science Team (CHaOS) who were also providing activities in the Craft Zone. One evening, we organised hands-on sessions for leaders as they were so keen to have a go having seen their scouts excitement when they returned to camp with their turned item. The leaders’ excitement also showed on their faces as they proudly showed off their handiwork.

East Herts Woodturners acknowledge the support from all the turners, Henry Taylor Tools, Axminster Power Tools, Frank Howard Tools, Toolpost, Chestnut, JET, Multistage, Birchanger Wood Trust, Staples and Stansted Airport Community Trust.

WOODTURNING FOR THE SCOUTS AT GILWELL24

For the second year, East Herts Woodturners with the support of Cambridge Woodturners, Herts and Beds woodturners, some professional turners and the AWGB, provided hands-on woodturning taster sessions for Scouts and their leaders attending Gilwell 24 on 9th July 2011.  With support from Henry Taylor Tools, Axminster, Charnwood, Frank Howard Tools, Toolpost, Chestnut, JET and Multistage, 14 training lathes were set up in a specially screened training area of a marquee at the headquarters of World Scouting. This enabled 194 Scouts and Leaders to experience woodturning on a one-to-one basis with an experienced turner.  In addition, 3 demonstration lathes were set up, in an open area, for people to watch woodturning.  A display of woodturned items, ranging from Faberge type eggs to goblets, bowls, platters and clocks, was also set up.
The new AWGB /Scout Association initiative, which enables Scouts to use woodturning for part of their badge work, was advertised and a large number of leaders expressed serious interest.  Although the clubs involved at Gilwell 24 are willing to support this initiative for Scouts in their own area, Leaders came from all over the UK.  Support for these groups would need to come from clubs in there own area.  If your club is approached for support,  please give it serious consideration.  Our experience of these events is that, as well as helping to introduce woodturning to youngsters, the turners also enjoy themselves."

Simon Hope gave a group of members a very interesting workshop day showing them how to prepare, turn and add pewter to their wooden pieces. This was much appreciated by the 5 participants. Some of their work is shown above.

TURN EAST 14th AUGUST 2010

What a great event this was, the Norfolk Branch again provided us with a super day out with four great demonstrators, some very worthwhile traders, an instant gallery, some good chat and of course as usual a  very impressive lunch and refreshments. This was the 10th time this event had been run over the last 20 years and it never lets us down thanks to the hard work of the club members but most of all thanks to Bernard Rose who shoulders the main behind the scenes organisation. This year there was a record attendance of 138 delegates. I can't wait til 2012 for the next one.

GILWELL 24 2010

Saturday July 10th saw a major scouting event supported by the East Herts branch of the AWGB with assistance from the Cambridge branch. The display and hands on activity was a real triumph and the Branch must be congratulated for their organisation of the woodturning marquee. Seven lathes, each manned by an experienced turner, were used to give 120 scouts a woodturning taster during the day. Great interest was shown by the scouts despite all the other attractions and sporting events available.

WOODWORKS @ DAVENTRY

Our Tudor Rose Branch gave us a two great days out this week end with their Spring Woodworking Show. It was well attended with a good range of Traders and a number of clubs showing off their activities and taking part in various competitions the event also included demonstrations by a number of professional turners. Well done Tudor Rose.

With Turn East on this year as well, is this the shape of things for the future in the regions?  Could we expect to see similar things happening in the North and South West soon?

MEMBERS WORKSHOP

The first Member's Workshop in the Eastern region was held on Saturday 29th May at Peter Child's premises. The Tutor was Chris Child (on the left) and the participants were from left to right David Errington, Marian Sargeant and Maurice Sore. Seen here with the results of their endeavours. They had a busy day and many lessons were learnt.

The Max Carey Woodturning Trust

The launch of the Max Carey Woodturners Trust took place on the 21st February 2010 at Portishead in Max Carey’s workshop which is the main training and instruction facility used by the Avon & Bristol Woodturners club. A not-for-profit charity the Trust has been created to train, educate and encourage a section of the public interested in attaining the skills of woodturning. The Trust considers the training of the youth section of the public of immense importance. The event was opened with a toast of champagne to Max Carey by Peter Ellis the High Warden of The Worshipful Company of Turners.  A contribution to the Trust for training purposes has been gratefully received from The Worshipful Company of Turners. The event included an excellent full day demonstration by Mark Baker (Woodturning Magazine editor) on woodturning techniques. Sixty four club members and invited guests attended the event. Burt Marsh, one of the invited guests was unable to attend due to ill health but graciously donated to the Trust one of his works of art, a paduak thin walled bowl. He requesting that it be auctioned off at the event and the proceeds be donated to the Trust. The auction raised £400, the kind donator being Ian Burke who joined the club only two months ago.
